I was fascinated by this novel. I love this author. Bapsi Sidhwa has written a truly stunning novel and I recommend it highly, infact, I would go so far as to call it an “essential” read because even today there are widow ashrams in Varnasi. Unfortunately, my copy of “Looming Fog” is at my parents’home in Bangalore couldn’t carry it back due to weight restrictionsbut hubby will collect it for me when he visits in November.

The story is about the lives of the child and bapis widows in the ashram and how their relationships evolve. A young man, however, falls in love with Kalyani and she with him, but widows aren’t allowed to interact with the rest of society, let alone fall in love. Quite contrary to the fashion, book was written after the film. Deprived of fried foods, a bed, sweets, colorful clothes and jewelry, the widows live on a meager subsistence but few accept Chuyia.
